Coyote Travels 600 Miles Wedged In Car Engine Compartment

Wile E Coyote of Roadrunner fame is famous for springing back from his cartoon rival’s elaborate ambushes. But it seems real-life coyotes also have a knack of cheating death – as one animal proved by surviving a 75mph car crash. Like Wile, the creature was hanging out in the wilds of the US when he walked into the road without looking. He was struck by a car carrying Daniel and Tevyn East. The collision sounded fatal so the brother and sister continued on their 1,000km (600-mile) journey.

They stopped for petrol twice on the way but only checked the car when they arrived in Nevada eight hours later. ‘Immediately I saw a ton of fur and said, “Sis, don’t look, this is bad”,’ said Mr East. They were amazed to find the coyote, which they have named Tricky, unhurt and embedded between the moulded bumper and radiator of their Honda Fit. They called a wildlife rescue officer who freed Tricky and took him to a rehabilitation centre.

‘It’s pretty insane,’ said Mr East. ‘Somehow the conditions were just right for it to survive the trip. People just can’t wrap their minds around the story.’ Staying true to form, Tricky escaped from rehab three days into his stay after wriggling out of a cage.
